Women, Land, and Legacy - First in Mills County
by Beverly Dashner

“Women, Land and Legacy” is a networking and support group for women with agricultural interests. The concept first started over a decade ago. Since that time it has spread throughout many counties in Iowa. The first meeting in Mills County was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in the Malvern Community Building.

Nearly 40 women from Mills and Pottawattamie Counties attended this first-in-a-series meeting. The goal of the first meeting was to discover the kind of information that women in agriculture are seeking and find the best ways to provide that information at quarterly meetings in the next year.

One of the groups discuss current issues that affect women. The local planning committee consisting of Suzanne Burgoin, Becky Wearin-Pulk, Delores Williams, and Beverly Dashner joined by the resources of many local farm agencies to help present the new format to the women. Mills County offices included the Southwest Iowa Conservation District, Farm Service Agency, NRCS, ISU Extension Service, and Golden Hills RCD.

Shirley Fredericksen of Golden Hills RCD was MC for the small and large group discussions. All agency representatives were very pleased with the number of women who attended.

Sponsors for the event included local banks, insurance agencies and other area businesses.
